Performance and solo exhibition at The Northern Charter, Newcastle (2013)
Selected works on paper, amplified spoken soundtrack, iTunes playlist, yoga mats, foam blocks, nuts, satsumas, pound coins
‘I like the Silver I like the Gold is a one-night exhibition, inspired by the artist’s curiosity of the exhibition preview format, questioning the extent to which an audience might relax enough when attending an exhibition opening, so as to access an engaged, imaginative space.
Susie Green will present a showcase of new works on paper and fabric in a dramatically lit environment. Each work will be introduced to the audience by the artist and then presented and worn by friends Alina Kropiwnicka and Rachel Gay on rotation, From here, works will be exhibited and handled for a limited period of time. Lightweight props associated with bodily release will provide a further platform for the display of works.
Further to this short display, all works will be exhibited and encircled by a circle of healthy snacks on the floor, that the artist eats in her studio. The audience is encouraged to add money (in the form of gold pound coins) to this decorative, spotlit viewing space, in order to pay both the artist and artist-run space for this sumptuous temporary event.
Taking inspiration from early salon fashion shows, auctions and parlour games, and the bold sensibilities of Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, the viewing environment will be a place of flux – at once playful, formal and seductive’. (Northern Charter press release, 2013)
