Goddess Mouth (2020) BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (UK)

‘Earlier this year, Susie Green spent two months in residence at Nida Art Colony, Lithuania, as part of the BALTIC | States residency programme organised by BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, UK.  This lightbox commission is based on Green’s four-part watercolour painting on paper titled Goddess Mouth (2020), developed during her time at Nida.

Evocative of stained glass windows, with light filtering through the varying tones of paint and swirling colours, the work draws its inspiration from the story of the Goddess Neringa, a powerful, giant female deity who was believed to have created the landmass of the Curonian Spit in the Baltic Sea, where Nida is located. The mouth of the Goddess repeats as if eternal; its pattern recalling the mirroring of sky in wet sand.

Through the lens of our increasingly strange times, Green’s work invites us to think about how our own mouths, as potential points of transmission, are now often guarded or covered to protect ourselves and others from illness’. (BALTIC Press release)

Available to view at BALTIC until December 2020
